  • Students can’t work for more than 20 hours per week, except during any vacations or in the case of an agreed work placement or internship
  • Students can’t engage in business, self-employment or provide services as a professional sportsperson or entertainer
  • Students can’t pursue a career by joining a permanent full-time vacancy
  • Extracurricular work placement or internship must be undertaken on a part-time basis (20 hours a week or fewer) during term time, or full-time during the holidays.

In short, international students can only work part-time jobs.

If you’re a Tier 4 student, you get full-time work placement, in case:

  • It’s an integral part of your full-time degree program
  • It doesn’t comprise more than half of your degree
  • You stay enrolled as a student at your university

In case of Tier 4 postgraduate visa pilot scheme, students get a period of six months to look for work in the UK after they have finished their course.

After finishing the Master degree, international students with Tier 4 visa have four months to land a job offer. After a job offer, students can apply for a Tier 2 visa which is a general category visa. Under General Category Tier 2 visa, immigrants can live and work in the UK for up to five years. The job must provide an annual salary of at least £20,800 or the industry equivalent.
